United Sisters was founded in 1996, on the initiative of two teenage girls. Since then hundreds of girls between the ages of 12 and 20 have been involved in the project in various ways. The girls all come from different backgrounds, and all the projects in United Sisters are carried out in cooperation with the girls, and are based on their suggestions, thoughts, evaluations and wishes.
Girls have a great deal of pressure from their environment, as far as their looks and body are concerned. Body fixation and shallowness make for an environment, where very little emphasis on an individual's mind is being placed. Since we place a great deal of emphasis on getting to know a person's inside, we invest a lot of time and energy on embracing this topic. One of the main goals of the United Sisters, is to actually be ‘united sisters', where we embrace the fact that everyone should have the right to be seen, heard, and above all, that we enjoy some quality time together.
Night Patrol
The Night Patrol girls work voluntarily, and they range from the ages of 16-20. After a three months training they walk in the city in order to assist other young people that might be too drunk to take care of them selves, or in a fight, or just upset and in need of someone to talk to. The training involves self-protection, medicine, ethics, legal studies, drug knowledge, and conflict- and crisis resolution.
Girlgroups
Each semester new girl groups are formed. Every group consists of three supervisors, and approximately 15 girls between the ages of 12-13, or 14-16. They meet for two hours once a week, during one semester. Topics such as love, friendship, drugs, role models, dreams, violence, grief, and prejudice are brought up through fun and various exercises! Every once in a while they go go-carting, dance samba, or go to the theatre, but mainly they just meet and discuss important topics and enjoy quality time together. The girls sometimes find friends for life, and if the group wants they can go on for yet another semester.
Coach
We are offering girlcoaches to young girls (under the age of 20) that are in need for adult support outside the family and school. The girlcoach´s assignment is to be there for the girl, to listen, support, strengthen, motivate, encourage and guide her on her journey to become a strong, secure, and healthy young woman.
Leaders
The group leaders and coaches, who are all working voluntarily, are all in different ages and different backgrounds. A leader receives training, and regular, professional guidance.
